Help for Volunteers
How do I join a harvest?
Go to home page, click on Calendar of Events (left hand column) and pick a harvest that suits your schedule, as long as 1) it’s not a private harvest and 2) space is available. If the harvest you want is full, put your name on the waiting list. If a spot opens up you will get an invitation.
Why do harvests get 'sold out'?
Backyard harvests, depending on where they are, can typically accommodate 8 to 12 volunteers. Once we reach that limit, the harvest is closed. When we harvest large orchards where there is room for a lot of people, we send out a special notice so everyone knows about it.
Are there other things I can do other than harvesting fruit?
Yes. We are an all-volunteer social production organization. We have tons of other work that you can do. The list is from data entry to application development, from speaking to groups to working with scouts. Do you like writing stories, taking pictures, making videos, scouting for new trees or getting the word out to your community? A good starting place might be to list what you enjoy doing and let us suggest a good match for your talent.
Do you have a video showing a typical harvest?
Yes. Watch the Harvest Overview
When is the next harvest?
Check out the Calendar of Events (left hand column of home page) All the harvests are listed on that page.
Can I bring my kids?
We love kids and most (but not all) of our harvests have tickets designated for minor children. As long as there is a ticket available for a minor child, grab it and bring the kids, they are some of our best workers!
What is the age limit?
Six years old. Minor children must be accompanied by a parent or a guardian and must be at least 6 years old.
What should I bring?
The usual stuff for being outdoors for 3 to 4 hours , sun screen, hat, sunglasses, water and anything else you may need. You know the drill. Be sure to dress comfortably and wear closed toed shoes, banging your toes into a rock might be memorable, but we don’t want that, do we!?
I'm under 18, can I volunteer?
Yes, you can as long as 1) your parent or guardian has signed the Release of Liability Agreement and 2) your parent or guardian accompanies you on each harvest. No they don’t have to work, but during a harvest we go from home to home and while we encourage volunteers to car pool, we do not match minors to drive with other volunteers.
Please download Release of Liability Agreement with Parental Consent and have your parent or guardian sign it. The release is good for one year from the date signed.
Do I need to climb a ladder to harvest fruit?
No. Most of our harvest is done by hand from the ground. There are plenty of other things you can do to help move a harvest along.
Where is the initial meeting place?
The initial meeting place is where we all gather to check-in and get oriented for the day. Most (but not all) of our harvests start at the lower parking lot of our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lafayette, where we park the harvest van.
The address for the initial meeting place is often listed on the event invitation. When it is not, you will receive the address 2 days before the harvest date.
IMPORTANT: Many of our harvests initiate at the lower parking lot of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lafayette. The address is
1035 Carol Lane Lafayette, CA 94549
The important thing here is LOWER parking lot. If you are entering Carol Lane from Mt. Diablo Boulevard, go past the church building and look for the sign of Springstone School. That’s the lower parking lot.
How do I cancel an Eventbrite reservation?
It’s easy. All you have to do is log in to your account at Eventbrite, click on My Tickets, find your order and cancel it. Here are step by step instructions.
Can I come without registering?
We would prefer if you register so we know how many people will be there. Backyard harvests can only accommodate a limited number of people. If at the last minute you decide to join, feel free to come. We will do our best to accommodate you. However, the priority goes to people that have registered.
What if at the last minute I find out that I can't make it?
It happens. If you can call us, great. If not, we’ll wait a few minutes and move on. If you are just delayed call us and we might be able to give you the location of where we are.
Do I have to sign a Release of Liability Agreement? If so, can I get a copy now?
Yes, you must. Use this link to download the Release of Liability Agreement
What are my transportation options?
We need you to come to the initial meeting place. From there we form carpools. Most of our harvests start in Lafayette. You can take BART to Lafayette and we are about 30 minutes walking distance from the BART station
